Project aims

The DisTerrMem project has a number of complementary aims.

We aim to build an international and interdisciplinary network of researchers, policymakers and stakeholders to exchange knowledge and understanding about the role that memory plays in disputed territories.

We aim to address gaps in current research relating to disputed territories, which does not yet adequately address issues of memory.

We aim to develop a new, innovative model for analysing and managing competing memories of disputed territories. This model will be transnational, interdisciplinary and multi-level. Moreover, it will be designed to support peace-building by exploring the management of competing memories in non-conflictual ways that take into account the diverse identities and interests of all parties involved.

We aim to apply the new model to the analysis of selected memory projects and initiatives in order to draw key lessons from relevant case studies.

We aim to identify and promote examples of best practice in managing competing memories of disputed territories, which will be relevant to policymakers, civil society groups and cultural practitioners operating at international, national and regional levels.

We aim to undertake a targeted programme of communication to connect the project and research team with relevant audiences.

We aim to increase awareness of the issue being investigated in the public domain, drawing attention to the importance of societal and individual memory in disputed territories and its potential role in peace-building.

We aim to establish a network of expert organisations and individuals in the field, establishing firm foundations for ongoing research and development beyond the initial timeline of the project.
